Electric cars trialled in cities

Electric cars are to be trialled in two cities in the West Midlands.

Over the next 12 months 110 electric cars and plug-in petrol-electric hybrids will be tested in Birmingham and Coventry.

The two cities will get a share of a £25m government grant so electrical points can be installed for drivers to charge up their vehicles.

Electric and other low carbon vehicles are being tested in eight separate projects across the UK.

People in the West Midlands are also being invited to take part in research trials of 100 smart electric cars.

A Transport Strategy Board spokesman said the trials were the biggest step to date of a co-ordinated and holistic approach to getting electric cars onto the roads.
